Diamond & Opal 18K Gold Ring # 11-339

This beautiful 18k yellow gold, diamond and opal ring is reminiscent of a bygone era. Produced around 1880, the design reflects jewelry’s transition from the heavy, mass pieces of the Mid-Victorian Era to the light, soft pieces of the Late Victorian/ Edwardian Era.

The flower design incorporates one diamond and four opals, all individually set using prongs.

The Late Victorian and Edwardian Era (1885-1910) brought lighter and softer clothing. Jewelry also became lighter in scale often using flowers as motifs and garnets for embellishment.

Diamonds have been coveted and used to embellish jewelry and accessories throughout the ages; the Greeks wore them into battle believing them to symbolize "inconquerability". Diamonds are the birthstone of April and are given to commemorate 60th anniversaries. They symbolize innocence.

The iridescent glow of the opal changes as it is exposed to different light and is a sign that the stone is precious. Opals were a favorite of Queen Victoria; she gave them as gifts and wore them herself. The ancient belief that opals were unlucky was transformed and they are now believed to bring good fortune. Opal is the birthstone for October and symbolizes hope.
