22K Gold Victorian Sapphire and Diamond Ring # 11-331
This exquisite 22k yellow gold sapphire and diamond ring makes use of a symmetrical, curved design. Produced about 1870, the design is unique to the Mid-Victorian Era when the style was large, massive jewelry. The setting boasts a 90 point round diamond and a 1 ct round, deep blue sapphire each securely set using 8 prongs. While the setting is pleasing and simple – the stones are elegant and spectacular.
The Mid-Victorian period (1860-1885) featured jewelry and clothing transitioning from modesty to opulence. Previously, women wore very little jewelry but the trend was toward heavy, massive and solid jewelry that was worn at all times for all occasions
Diamonds have been coveted and used to embellish jewelry and accessories throughout the ages; the Greeks wore them into battle believing them to symbolize "inconquerability". Diamonds are the birthstone of April and are given to commemorate 10th, 30th, and 60th anniversaries. They symbolize innocence.
Sapphires became popular in the 1860’s and have been designated as the birthstone for September. They symbolize clear thinking.
